I Don't Think They did the Hand Jive

So the absolute most important thing about homecoming is what you wear to the dance.  I thought this was only an issue for girls, but I guess guys find it important too.

A few weeks back Jason and I were sitting around and Grease was on the TV.  It happened to be the school dance scene, and about that time Reed and JR walked in.  They both couldn't stop talking about how John Travolta's outfit was the "coolest thing" they had ever seen.  And the conversation ending with JR announcing that he wanted to wear the same thing to homecoming. 

So with John Travolta as our "inspiration", we used what was in his closet and I only had to come up with finding a pink dress shirt. 

I think he looked great.

He went with a group of theater kids who are all seniors.  

Oh, and I made Gina's bouquet.  I think I did pretty good! 

He said they had lots of fun. 

A Win and a Lesson

We headed out bright and early Saturday morning for Kyle's diving meet.

He has added a back 1&1/2 to both his 1 meter and 3 meter list (he did it for the first time on 3 meter last week) so we were excited to see how that would go.

He did a great job on the 3 meter and he finished 2nd in the 13 and under division (as an 11 year old).

He was trucking along nicely in the 1 meter, and after his 3rd dive I was feeling great since all he had left was his double front, and his back 1& 1/2 (2 of his strongest dives).  

So you can imagine my reaction when I saw him do a single front flip instead of a double for his 4th dive.  And to make it worse, in diving, if you don't do the right dive you get 0 points.  So they aren't judging you on a double that you singled, you just get a 0.

Getting 0 points obviously dropped him to last place (11th).

But, to Kyle's credit, he came back strong and on his last dive he did a good enough back 1 & 1/2 that he finished in 8th place.  He got 0 points for an entire round and still beat 3 kids.   Hopefully he also learned that if he has a bad approach to stop and start over because it's better to lose 2 points, than to get 0 points. 

And on the most positive note of all, the meet was put on by Kyle's coach, so I got to announce the winners on the microphone at the natatorium! 

The Country Singer and the Disney Princess

This weekend has been one of the busiest on record, but here we are at Monday, and it feels like we can sit and take a breath.

JR and his homecoming date crack me up.  If you ask them what they want to be when they "grow up" they will each tell you with all seriousness- JR: "a country singer"/Gina: "a Disney princess". 

Of course Jason is screaming in the background, "No you're not! You're going to be a lawyer!" and Gina's mom is screaming, "No you're not! You're going to be a petroleum engineer!" 

Questionable career choices on their part aside, the wannabe country singer and Disney princess went to homecoming together this weekend.

On Friday night they both had Singing in the Rain rehearsal until 5:30 (JR is Cosmo Brown to Gina's Lina Lamont) and then JR had to be at the game at 6:15 to sing with the choir, so they did their mum/garter exchange on Thursday.

As you'll notice, the Disney princess got her Disney mum, and the country singer had all kinds of bandanna ribbon in his.

A norther blew in Thursday night, so Friday was downright cold (for us in Texas, anyway).

So here's JR pre football game.

Jason and I went to the game and took the boys with us.

He did eventually make it out to the field to sing.

We stayed until after the halftime show (JR didn't even stay that long).  The little guys had fun, but were disappointed there weren't enough 6 grade girls there, as they were all at a big volleyball tournament. 

Big Game/Bigger Loss

Jason and I went to the World Series last night.

I saw Altuve

And Kate Upton's husband.

I smiled and danced around and tried my hardest to get on TV (obviously).

But I didn't. 

It was a terrible game, and we left in the 7th inning when things really started to get bad.  I was using my stolen JR catch phrase quite a bit..."They aren't even trying to win!"  I also may have said "I've seen Reed's (little league) team play better" multiple times. 

But, terrible playing and game aside, here are 3 World Series take aways:

1. Honestly, it just kinda felt like going to a baseball game except there's waaaayyy more people (and they're all wearing $500 worth of Astros merch. Every woman is decked out in the Kate Upton rainbow sweater).

 2. Everything is waaayyy more expensive.  A can of beer is $15.75.  And a t-shirt is $50. 

3. I don't understand the people who pay for "standing room only" tickets.  How do they see anything?

But it was fun. I'm glad I went, and I'm glad I got to experience it. 

So Thankful

We were so thankful and appreciative to everybody who came out to see JR's show. He had so many friends and family members come out to support him.

His middle school "announcements" teacher.  Peyton and JR did the announcements every morning  when they were in 8th and 6th grade so she was excited to see them on stage together.

Caroline flew in from Florida to see him.  I told her we weren't allowed to sit together during the show because we wouldn't be able to handle it.  She came out at intermission crying (she was so proud) so we made the right decision not to sit with each other! 

Reed came for 1 show and Kyle came for 2 

Granny Sherry came for 2 shows too. 

And I was there (of course) with all my theater booster peeps each night.

JR's show wrapped on Saturday night and he told me he's sad that it's over.  I told him "Well, y'all start practicing for Singing in the Rain in 2 days, so I think you'll be ok."

One Away

We are one show away from JR being finished with the fall musical.  So far his voice has held out, so fingers crossed for tonight.

The kids have done such a good job of promoting their show, and the pictures of JR are just priceless.

These two have been singing together since they were in middle school!

 I guess we're all feeling this way about it being the last night.
